TikTok Smart+ app campaigns: what automation covers—and which levers stay manual
Analysis

Documented Smart+ App Campaign eligibility, placement, bidding and creative controls versus the upgraded Smart+ manual path.
TikTok’s help centre documents Smart+ App Campaigns as an AI-assisted App Promotion path with fixed placement and bidding options, alongside an upgraded Smart+ experience that can run fully automated or manual campaigns. Buyers deciding whether Smart+ is eligible for an app campaign should treat the settings below as the current documented checklist. First announcement dates for each lever are not stated on these pages and remain unknown.
What Smart+ App Campaigns currently allow
About Smart+ App Campaigns (last updated August 2026) scopes the product as follows:
- Objective: App promotion.
- OS: iOS and Android.
- Placement: iOS limited to TikTok and Lemon8 (where available); Search not supported. Android uses automatic placement including TikTok, Lemon8 (where available) and TikTok Pangle (where available); Search not supported. The page states that manually selecting placements is not supported for Smart+ Campaigns and that placement defaults to automatic.
- Optimisation goals: MAI (install), AEO (in-app event), and VBO (Android only).
- Targeting country: Global.
- Bidding: iOS — Maximize Results. Android — Target Cost per Result and Maximum Results. A note states Smart+ will not impact ongoing Smart Performance Campaigns (SPC).
- Format / landing: Interactive Add-on (except Carousel); Spark and non-Spark ads, with an explicit rule that Smart+ App Campaigns do not support mixing Spark and non-Spark ads in one campaign; iOS can use an App profile page.
- Additional tools: Multilingual tool, Recommended Ads, Recommended Ads (Autopull), and App2Carousel (automated carousel generation from App Store page images).
Creation path on the same page: choose App promotion → App install → toggle Smart+ campaign on. The page positions iOS Smart+ as a fit for advertisers eligible for iOS real-time conversion reporting, and Android Smart+ for cost-efficiency and scale via Target Cost per Result.
Where manual control returns in the upgraded experience
How to create manual and automated campaigns in the upgraded Smart+ experience (last updated August 2026) states that manual and Smart+ flows are unified, and that advertisers can choose full automation, partial automation or fully manual. Availability note: the feature may not be available in every account yet.
Documented differences relevant to control:
| Lever | Fully automated Smart+ path | Manual path in upgraded experience |
|---|---|---|
| Objectives | Sales, Lead Generation, App Promotion, Traffic | Same supported set |
| Budget | Automatic campaign budget (CBO-style); same optimisation location, goal, event and target CPA across ad groups | Ad group budget; different budget and bidding per ad group |
| Audience | Automatic targeting by default; Audience controls and Audience suggestions | Switch to custom targeting for the full manual targeting set |
| Placement | Automatic placement by default (may include Pangle partner surfaces by region) | Select placement — choose specific placements to include |
| Creative | Combinations of videos and texts; high-performing combinations delivered automatically | Same combination model; can constrain to single creative + text pairs |
Who should act, and how
Studio UA buyers should:
- Confirm App Promotion / App install eligibility and whether Smart+ is toggled on in their account.
- Check OS-specific placement and bidding tables before assuming Pangle, Search or iOS Cost Cap control.
- If they need manual placement exclusion or custom targeting, use the upgraded manual path rather than classic Smart+ App defaults.
- Avoid mixing Spark and non-Spark creatives in one Smart+ App campaign.
Our editorial inference—not a TikTok performance claim—is that teams that must exclude Pangle or lock a narrow geo/audience will often need the manual upgraded path. A Smart+ toggle alone does not prove every creative or bid lever remains available.
Limits of this record
This edition body-reads TikTok Ads Manager help articles. It does not inspect a studio Ads Manager account, certify feature entitlement, or report campaign CPA/ROAS. Announcement and per-lever enforcement dates stay unknown until TikTok publishes them.
