$2.5B into games in Q2, mostly AI and ad tech

Drake Star's Q2 report puts games investment at a 12-month high, led by AI and ad tech, with Playstack, CCP Games and Supercell all changing hands.

Drake Star's second-quarter report, published July 16, puts gaming investment at more than 2.5 billion dollars across 96 private rounds, the highest quarterly total in 12 months. AI and ad tech pulled most of that capital. Hardware came third. It's a different mix from the platform and studio stories that dominated headlines earlier in the year.

M&A stayed busy alongside the funding

M&A didn't slow down either. Drake Star counts 1.4 billion dollars across 51 deals in the quarter. Playstack and IMC changed hands. Supercell acquired Metacore. Atari picked up Hipster Whale, while CCP Games went through a management buyout. None of these individually rivals the scale of Q1's headline deals; Savvy paid 6 billion dollars for Moonton alone, and PocketGamer.biz and Aream put Q1's total M&A at 7.7 billion dollars when they reported in April. What the volume of mid-size transactions does tell you is that consolidation isn't confined to the largest platforms and publishers.

What the AI and ad tech money means for buyers

For buyers, the money is following infrastructure and tooling rather than content alone. AI and ad tech investment at this scale usually shows up downstream as new creative production tools; as new bidding and measurement products; or as acquisitions that change who owns a vendor a UA team already depends on.

Nothing in this report names a specific vendor change yet.

Even so, a quarter this concentrated in AI and ad tech capital deserves watching for the product announcements that follow from DSPs and MMPs, several of which have already taken outside investment this year.

The mix also says something about where founders and investors think the next margin is. A funding quarter weighted toward tooling rather than new studios or new IP is a bet that the bottleneck in games right now is production and distribution efficiency, not a shortage of game ideas. That reading fits a first half in which ad networks and MMPs raised or restructured repeatedly while comparatively few new studios made headlines for their funding rounds alone.
