Gamescom on a phone: capturing PC and console attention for mobile launches

Gamescom's audience is built for PC and console reveals. A practical checklist for a mobile launch at Gamescom, a show week it was not designed for.
Gamescom 2026 opened in Cologne on August 25 with Opening Night Live, and for one week the games press, streamers, and a large slice of the enthusiast audience are paying attention to trailers, hands-on previews, and stage reveals built for PC and console. A mobile studio with a launch or a live-ops event landing during show week is competing for coverage against triple-A reveals with production budgets an order of magnitude larger. That is a real disadvantage. It is not a reason to sit the week out.
The mistake mobile teams make during Gamescom week is trying to imitate the console playbook at a smaller scale: a cinematic trailer, an embargoed preview, a press list. That approach loses on production value every time, and it also targets the wrong audience, since Gamescom's core press and streamer base skews toward PC and console coverage norms that do not map cleanly onto how mobile games actually get discovered.
What actually earns attention for a mobile launch at Gamescom
A mobile team's advantage during Gamescom is that its audience mostly is not in the room. The show floor and the livestream audience overlap only partially with the players who will actually install a mobile game, and the smarter play is to use the week's elevated attention as a backdrop rather than trying to win the same coverage as a console reveal.
- Time creative refreshes to the show's news cycle rather than trying to break news of your own. A UA campaign that references what the broader industry is talking about that week, without needing a press hit to justify it, gets some borrowed relevance at no incremental production cost.
- If there is a genuine reveal or event, build the mobile-native version of it directly: a short vertical clip built for feed placement, not a cut-down version of a horizontal trailer. Cropping console-style creative for mobile feeds after the fact reliably underperforms creative built vertical from the start.
- Brief influencer and UGC-style creators on the show's themes in advance so their content can go out same-week rather than after the news cycle has moved on. This year's fatigue data on creator-style formats, which one creative vendor reported in September as running 30 to 40% slower fatigue than studio-shot video, is a reason to lean on this channel for time-sensitive moments rather than treat it as a slower-moving evergreen asset type.
- Do not compete for embargoed preview slots with outlets whose Gamescom coverage plan was built around console exclusives months in advance. A pitch that arrives during show week itself is unlikely to displace commitments made earlier in the year.
The measurement discipline that gets skipped
Show-week campaigns tend to get judged on vibes rather than numbers, because everyone accepts that a single week of elevated activity is hard to isolate cleanly. Resist that. Tag show-week creative distinctly from the surrounding campaign, hold a comparison cohort running standard creative in parallel where budget allows, and be honest afterward about whether the Gamescom framing outperformed or whether it just coincided with a week the team happened to spend more on.
Gamescom will not make a mobile launch feel like a console reveal, and trying to force that comparison wastes a production budget better spent on formats mobile audiences actually respond to. The studios that get value out of show week are the ones that treat it as one input into an always-on mobile creative calendar, not as an event to win outright.
