GTA 6's autumn campaign will distort mobile CPMs. Plan for it now

Take-Two confirmed GTA 6's marketing push starts this summer, holding a November 19 release. GTA 6 mobile CPM planning should start before Q4 budgets lock.
Take-Two has confirmed that marketing for GTA 6 began this summer, and the studio is holding its November 19, 2026 release date. No mobile SKU here, so nothing competes directly for install slots. But this will be one of the largest media buys of the year, and media buys that size do not stay contained to the platforms carrying the game's own ads: a campaign built to reach as much of the console and PC buying public as possible overlaps heavily with the demographic mobile game buyers spend against on video and social inventory, and on connected TV.
This is expectation, not observed fact. Nobody has published a CPM read yet, and this piece won't invent one. The mechanism isn't new, though: any advertiser spending at franchise-launch scale on the channels UA teams also buy pulls up the price of the audience everyone is competing for. GTA 5's own launch is the reference point every media buyer already carries in their head, even without hard numbers from this specific campaign yet, and Take-Two has not been shy about the scale of this one.
What the GTA 6 campaign means to model now, not in October
Three planning moves are worth making before Q4 budgets lock rather than after CPMs move, and the first one belongs in the forecast itself. Build a CPM sensitivity scenario into your Q4 forecast instead of a flat budget line, so that if your baseline blended CPM rises even modestly through October and November on channels that overlap with a broad entertainment campaign, you already know what that does to your target install volume at a fixed budget, or what additional budget you would need to hold volume flat. The other two are about exposure and timing.
- Identify which of your channels are most exposed. Video and connected TV inventory bought against broad entertainment audiences is more exposed than narrow, in-app placements bought against gaming-specific audiences. If your media mix leans toward the former, your forecast should lean more conservative.
- Decide now whether to compete for volume through the peak weeks around the release, or to shift discretionary spend earlier into September and October, when the campaign is confirmed to be running but has not yet reached its most intensive pre-launch push. Both are legitimate strategies. Neither works well as a decision made in the moment.
The GTA 6 timeline also collides with the usual Q4 auction
None of this happens in isolation. Holiday advertisers ramp through November regardless of what else is competing for the same inventory, and this year that ramp lands on top of a single-title marketing campaign large enough to move broad-audience CPMs on its own. A UA team that models Q4 as "the usual holiday CPM curve" without a separate line for this campaign is working from an incomplete forecast. The confirmed date, November 19, gives you a fixed point to plan the sensitivity scenario around even before the campaign reaches its most visible weeks. Wait for the first reported CPM spike and you have chosen to plan a quarter behind the advertiser setting the pace.
What a mobile game gets out of the overlap, if anything
There is a version of this story where a genre-adjacent title (an open-world or crime-themed mobile game in particular) tries to ride the attention rather than just absorb the cost. Worth a conversation with the creative team now, since any campaign built to piggyback on GTA 6's cultural moment needs enough lead time to land as tasteful rather than obviously opportunistic. But it is the smaller consideration. The CPM effect applies to every mobile UA team buying broad-audience inventory in October and November regardless of genre, and the fun idea should not crowd out the planning task.
The campaign will raise the cost of attention before it raises anyone's download numbers by association.
