Moloco goes to Costco and CTV. Should game buyers care where their DSP diversifies?
By UA Ledger staff — Archive date: 3 min read

Moloco picked up Costco as a client and launched a CTV product in three weeks. The Moloco Costco CTV move raises where the algorithm's attention goes next.
Moloco Commerce Media was named Costco's onsite advertising partner on April 2. Three weeks later, on April 22, Moloco launched an AI-powered Performance CTV product aimed at app marketers. Neither announcement is about mobile games directly. Both are worth a UA team's attention anyway, because Moloco's core business for the past several years has been bidding on behalf of exactly this readership.
Moloco's pattern is not new, but the pace is
Moloco built its reputation and its valuation, last pegged above $2bn in a 2023 secondary, on programmatic bidding for mobile app install and re-engagement campaigns, with gaming as a large share of that book. Retail media and CTV are adjacent categories with structurally similar problems: real-time bidding against a probabilistic model of who is likely to convert, at scale, with thin margins per impression. It is a rational place for a DSP to expand once mobile game UA budgets stop growing at the rate they did in the previous few years.
The question for a game buyer is not whether Moloco is allowed to sell ads for a warehouse retailer. It is what expansion into commerce media and CTV does to the product roadmap and the machine learning that a game buyer depends on.
Two ways to read it
The optimistic read: a bigger, more diverse advertiser base gives Moloco's models more signal and more scale to spread infrastructure cost across, which should make the core mobile app product cheaper and better over time. Commerce media in particular brings closed-loop purchase data that is generally higher quality than app-install proxy signals, and there is a real argument that cross-pollination between verticals sharpens the underlying bidding engine industry-wide.
The more cautious read: engineering and product attention is finite. A DSP building a new CTV creative pipeline and a retail-media reporting suite in the same quarter it is reportedly preparing for an IPO, having hired Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan in February, is a DSP with a lot of parallel priorities. Feature requests specific to mobile game buyers, cohort-level ROAS reporting quirks, SKAdNetwork nuance, hyper-casual creative rotation, compete for the same roadmap slots as a Costco integration.
What actually moves a media plan
Nothing here should change spend allocation this week. Moloco's core game-UA product has not announced a material change in policy, pricing or performance. But it is a reasonable moment to ask an account team two direct questions: what percentage of engineering headcount now sits on non-gaming verticals, and whether the roadmap items a game team has been waiting on are still scheduled for this half or have quietly slipped behind the CTV launch.
A DSP diversifying its revenue base is not automatically bad for an existing vertical. Ad tech companies that build only for gaming tend to be more exposed when gaming budgets contract, which happened to more than one platform in 2025. The businesses worth watching closely are the ones where diversification changes who gets the product manager's attention, not just who shows up on the earnings call.
