Socialpoint: a higher install cost can still buy the more valuable cohort

Socialpoint's public case is a compact example of why an install-cost ranking can conflict with a business-value ranking. The next decision requires the rest of the funnel.
Socialpoint's public case is a compact example of why an install-cost ranking can conflict with a business-value ranking. The next decision requires the rest of the funnel.
What the public case establishes
AppsFlyer describes Socialpoint joining media costs with engagement and revenue data. The case says Facebook and Instagram traffic could have higher install costs while purchase conversion supported comparable returns, and gives World Chef as a different launch example. Those are selected observations in a supplier customer story. AppsFlyer case study.
This debrief analyses a public customer case published by a commercial supplier. It is not an original UA Ledger interview. The chronology below follows the supplier’s account; we did not inspect the advertiser’s dashboards or interview its staff.
The decision worth examining
The cheaper install is not automatically the cheaper customer, and the more expensive install is not automatically worth its price. The decision depends on what the acquired cohort does and what that behaviour is worth under a consistent definition. A team that optimises CPI alone can reward low-intent volume; a team that invokes quality without evidence can rationalise any cost.
The worksheet keeps install cost, purchase conversion, revenue per purchaser and advertising revenue separate before combining them. This makes the economic bridge visible. It also prevents an average conversion improvement from being applied to every source, market and creative as though the same players were acquired everywhere.
A usable next check
Using an authorised cohort at one maturity point, rank sources once by CPI and again by the team's complete value measure. Identify reversals and explain which downstream term causes them. Treat small or immature cohorts as uncertain rather than forcing a precise ordering. A subsequent budget test should evaluate marginal value at the proposed scale, not merely copy the historical ranking.
| Test element | Proposed specification |
|---|---|
| Control | Source ranking based only on install cost |
| Variant | Same mature cohorts ranked using explicit downstream value components |
| Readout | Ranking reversals, maturity and sensitivity to uncertain revenue |
| Stop or reject | Do not defend expensive traffic with an undefined quality claim |
Download the populated case worksheet. Its control, variant and decision rules are a proposed experiment, not an account of results already measured. Keep the source URL with the worksheet when circulating it so reported findings cannot become unattributed team benchmarks.
Evidence boundary
The source does not provide complete cohorts, causal allocation or present-day platform economics. We did not verify its reported conversion or cost improvements. The article proposes a comparison workflow, not a target CPI or a recommendation to buy a particular channel.
For background, see reading an mmp dashboard without fooling yourself and cohort quality checklist ua spend. These are existing archive discussions, not independent certification of this case. No first-hand campaign result is asserted.
