Rewarded acquisition returns with a retention mandate

Rewarded acquisition works when the incentive bridges into a behavior the product wants to sustain, not when it is the only reason a player acts.

Rewarded acquisition becomes fragile when the incentive is the only reason a player acts at all. It gets more interesting, and a lot more defensible to a finance team, when the reward accelerates a behavior the product wants to sustain anyway. That distinction carries the whole argument. It is why rewarded formats belong in a serious UA plan rather than in the drawer of volume levers a team reaches for only when it misses CPI targets.

Why rewarded is getting a second look

Mintegral's 2026 Non-Gaming App Trends Report, published this week with Insightrackr, found rewarded video eCPMs running as high as 165 times standard banner rates on iOS, alongside automated bidding spend up more than 50%. That is a demand-side signal, not a quality signal. It is still reason enough for buyers who had deprioritized rewarded formats to check current rates again, rather than assuming the format is still underpriced or over-saturated the way it may have been a few years ago.

None of that pricing data says anything about whether the players arriving through rewarded placements are worth keeping. A format can command a strong eCPM because advertisers are competing for supply that converts cheaply, while the resulting cohort stays just as fragile as it always was when the incentive hangs off nothing durable; the pricing signal is a reason to look again, not a reason to scale before checking cohort quality.

Design the bridge

The best rewarded flows introduce a real system and grant enough value to make progress legible, then leave the player with a next goal rather than a dead end once they have claimed the reward. The reward is a bridge into motivation, not a substitute for it. A rewarded ad that hands over currency with no attached system to spend it in meaningfully has done nothing but buy an install; one that opens a genuine progression path has bought a player's first real look at the game's actual loop.

The practical test is simple to state and easy to skip under launch pressure: could a player who never saw the rewarded ad reach the same moment through normal play, in a similar number of sessions. Yes means the reward accelerated something real. No, because the reward hands over a system the free path will not reach for hours or days, means the incentive has manufactured a false sense of progress, and the player notices it as soon as the free path catches up, or fails to.

Evaluate beyond completion

Completion rate and cheap volume can hide low intent, and a rewarded campaign that looks efficient on a completion basis can still be a poor use of budget if the cohort churns the moment the reward runs out. So compare before scaling. Take the resulting cohort against an equivalent non-rewarded one on downstream engagement and economy health, then on retention. That comparison separates a rewarded strategy with a retention mandate from one chasing a cheap completion number.

What this means for the media plan

Practically, this argues for testing rewarded placements alongside a studio's existing format mix rather than instead of it, with an explicit retention checkpoint before any budget shift. A rewarded concept that clears its cohort-quality bar earns a larger allocation the same way any other winning concept would. One that does not is a format experiment that did not pan out this time, not evidence the format itself is broken.

A useful discipline here is running the same cohort-quality scorecard you would run for any other creative concept: day-one session count, a payer flag inside the first week, day-seven retention, all of it against a matched non-rewarded cohort from the same period. Rewarded acquisition does not need a separate measurement framework. It needs the same one, applied without exception, because the format's higher current eCPMs make it tempting to relax the bar exactly when it should stay fixed.

The UA Ledger view

Incentive is not inherently low quality. Misalignment is. The campaign and the product economy must tell the same story, and a rewarded flow that keeps that story consistent is one of the more defensible ways to buy a first look at a game, current eCPMs notwithstanding.
