Savvy's CEO steps down after $38B of deals: what changes for Scopely, Niantic and Moonton

Brian Ward's exit from Savvy Games Group puts an interim PIF executive atop a portfolio that includes Scopely, Niantic and a $6B Moonton deal.
Brian Ward stepped down as chief executive of Savvy Games Group on September 1, ending a run in which he oversaw roughly $37.8 billion of Public Investment Fund money moving into games. Turqi Alnowaiser, a PIF executive, takes the role on an interim basis while the fund decides on a permanent replacement.
What Savvy's portfolio looks like now
The portfolio Ward leaves behind is not small. Savvy owns Scopely outright, folded Niantic's games business in afterward, and in March agreed to buy Moonton, maker of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, from ByteDance for $6 billion, roughly 50% above what ByteDance paid for it in 2021. Reports at the time had Moonton's management staying on, which matters rather more now that the buyer's own leadership has changed mid-process.
None of this means Savvy's spending stops.
PIF's gaming mandate has run for years, and the framing around Ward's exit pointed to succession rather than strategy. But an interim chief executive tends to defer the calls a permanent one makes freely: new acquisitions, budget reallocation between studios, headcount decisions inside recently bought companies. Each of the three studios sits mid-integration in one form or another, and mid-integration is exactly when a change at the top of the parent company slows things down instead of speeding them up.
What changes for Scopely, Niantic and Moonton teams
For UA teams inside those studios, the practical read is patience rather than alarm. Budgets already committed for Q4 are unlikely to move on a leadership change alone. What deserves attention is whether Moonton's UA and publishing arrangements under Savvy get finalised on the original timeline, given that the deal was only agreed in March with no public detail on closing. Ask your contacts at any of the three studios directly whether planning assumptions for the rest of the year still hold. Don't assume continuity by default.
