Epic and Google drop the settlement. July 22 is now the date

An abstract courtroom gavel dissolving into app store grid icons

Epic and Google's joint settlement withdrawal leaves the 2024 injunction governing outright, and Google says it will comply from July 22.

Epic and Google jointly withdrew their proposed Play Store settlement on July 15. There is no new deal to read, no fresh terms to model. What buyers get instead is simpler and, in the short term, more useful: the October 2024 injunction now governs Google Play without a settlement sitting on top of it, and Google has told the court it will comply from July 22.

The settlement had been on shaky ground since January, when an evidentiary hearing before Judge Donato surfaced a previously undisclosed 800 million dollar commercial partnership between Epic and Google. Donato flagged it as a possible quid pro quo, and the FTC objected to the arrangement. By April, Donato was scheduling a summer evidentiary hearing rather than signing off, which was as close to a signal as the case gave that the settlement would not survive in its original form. It has not survived at all.

For buyers, the practical difference between "a settlement pending" and "the injunction governs, full stop" is mostly about certainty. The 2024 injunction already barred Google from anti-steering practices and from taxing link-outs on Android, and Google has separately told developers it will begin surfacing third-party Android app stores in the US from July 22, tied directly to this injunction. With the settlement gone, that timeline is no longer contingent on a deal that might change its terms. It is the baseline, not a placeholder.

The settlement withdrawal: what changes for a UA team this quarter

Nothing changes in the product itself on July 15. The changes land on July 22, when third-party store listings start appearing in the US Play experience. Between now and then, three things are worth doing rather than waiting on:

  • Confirm your MMP and creative tracking cover install sources beyond the Play Store client, since a user who lands via a third-party store listing may follow a different attribution path than a direct Play Store install.
  • Check whether your app's Play Console settings have any store-visibility preferences that assumed a single, exclusive listing surface. Google's notice in June gave developers an opt-out window running to July 22.
  • Brief creative and store-page teams on the possibility that competing storefronts will surface alongside your own listing, which is a different competitive frame from ranking against other apps inside one store.

The quieter half of the story

Google's compliance obligations are not limited to store listings. The same July 15 policy cycle brought tighter child-safety and anonymous-chat rules, restrictions on READ_CALL_LOG verification, and an extension of user-data rules to third-party AI integrations. None of that is new litigation, but it lands in the same week and on the same platform, which means a compliance review scheduled around the settlement news is a reasonable moment to check those boxes too.

The Epic v Apple track remains separate and slower. The Ninth Circuit sent that case back to Judge Gonzalez Rogers in April to determine what fees Apple can charge on external payment links, and the Supreme Court agreed in June to hear Apple's appeal, though only on a narrow procedural question. None of that bears directly on what happens to Google Play on July 22. Buyers tracking both cases should keep them on separate calendars: one has a fixed date next week, the other is still working through appellate machinery with no date attached.
