Gamescom 2026 for mobile UA: who was buying, and what they said they wanted

A Gamescom 2026 mobile UA debrief: the themes that came up on the floor and in meeting rooms, without inventing quotes that were not given.

Gamescom 2026 ran in Cologne through the week of August 25, with devcom sitting just ahead of it on August 17 and 18. Both events pull a different crowd from PGC London or GDC: more publisher and platform business development, less pure indie pitch traffic, and a console and PC skew that no mobile-specific conference carries. That mix shapes what the mobile UA conversations actually looked like.

Consolidation dominated the hallway and meeting-room talk, and it wasn't abstract. The week arrived a few weeks after Tripledot closed its purchase of Supersonic from Unity, and after Unity and AppLovin posted second-quarter results that made clear how differently the two companies now sit: Unity narrowing around Vector, AppLovin widening into new categories with its Wurl acquisition. Studios and publishers at the show were still visibly working out what that means for which networks and publishing partners count as stable bets over the coming year.

Nobody treated it as settled news.

This Gamescom debrief: budget conversations skewed toward efficiency

Sensor Tower's State of Mobile 2026 and its February State of Gaming report both pointed this way earlier in the year, and the acquisition conversations at Gamescom followed suit: retention and lifetime value ahead of raw install volume. Publishers talking about UA budgets for the back half framed things around payback periods and cohort quality rather than headline CPI targets. That matches what buyers have said all year. What stood out was the setting, because even on a show floor built for splashy reveals the commercial conversations stayed disciplined.

Web shops and off-platform monetisation came up far more than in prior years, which tracks with Xsolla's Web Shop Ecosystem announcement from earlier in August and Apple's latest EU fee overhaul landing the week before the show. Publishers with EU-heavy user bases were actively swapping notes on web-shop infrastructure vendors. A year ago that was a niche topic at Gamescom.

What was notably absent

Two things that could have dominated barely registered. GTA 6 marketing began over the summer and the game still holds its November 19 release date, yet mobile UA conversations rarely raised it as a competitive concern, which suggests most mobile teams do not see a console open-world release as a real attention competitor for their own campaigns, whatever a Gamescom-week console reveal might imply. The other absence was creative. Playable ads and creative-format innovation, a constant theme at PGC London and GDC earlier in the year, took up far less airtime here, and the likeliest reason is that Gamescom's audience mix leans toward publishing and platform deals rather than the creative and performance-marketing crowd that fills those other events.

What it means for a UA team planning Q4

The consistent signal across the week: budget owners enter the final quarter cautious about network stability and focused on retention economics rather than volume. Any network or publishing relationship that changed hands this year, Supersonic's move to Tripledot chief among them, deserves a fresh check-in rather than an assumption of continuity. And expect the retention-over-volume framing that ran through informal Gamescom conversation to keep shaping budgets right through the holiday auction.
