Google Play Families ads policy: SDK, format and content gates for kids-adjacent games
Analysis
By UA Ledger staff — 3 min read

Current Play Families ads and monetisation constraints—self-certified SDKs, no interest-based ads to children, and format bans including non-closeable rewarded ads.
Producers monetising kids-adjacent games on Google Play must follow the Families Ads and Monetization requirements in Google Play Families Policies. The practical question for rewarded playables and network SDKs is whether the app’s declared audience is children-only or mixed—and which format bans then apply. Policy effective/announcement calendar dates are not listed on the article and remain unknown; this is a current-requirement record.
Ads requirements when children (or unknown age) see ads
If the app displays ads to children or users of unknown age, the Families policy requires that you:
- Use only Google Play Families Self-Certified Ads SDKs for those users
- Ensure ads do not involve interest-based advertising or remarketing
- Ensure ad content is appropriate for children
- Follow Families ad format requirements
- Comply with applicable laws and industry standards on advertising to children
For children-only audiences, only Families self-certified SDK versions may be used. For mixed audiences, implement age screening (e.g. a neutral age screen) so ads shown to children come exclusively from self-certified SDK versions.
Format bans that hit rewarded and interstitial playables
When the sole target audience is children—or when serving children/unknown-age users in a mixed-audience app—the following are prohibited:
- Disruptive monetisation taking the entire screen without a clear dismiss control (ad walls)
- Monetisation that interferes with normal use or gameplay, including rewarded or opt-in ads that are not closeable after 5 seconds
- Interstitials displayed immediately on app launch
- Multiple ad placements on a page
- Monetisation not clearly distinguishable from app content (offerwalls and other immersive ad experiences)
- Shocking or emotionally manipulative tactics
- Deceptive click-through patterns
- Failing to distinguish virtual currency from real-money purchases
Non-interfering ads (example given: video content with integrated ads) may persist longer than 5 seconds.
Content that must not be shown to children
Examples of inappropriate ad content listed on the same page include ads for inappropriate media, inappropriate games/software, controlled substances, gambling (including simulated gambling and contests), adult/sexually suggestive content, dating, and violent/graphic content.
Who should act, and how
Studio producers and UA/monetisation owners should:
- Confirm Play Console Target Audience declarations against actual creative and store listing cues.
- Restrict child/unknown-age inventory to Families self-certified SDK versions; disable interest-based/remarketing for those users.
- QA rewarded units for a clear close control within 5 seconds when Families format rules apply.
- Brief demand-side creatives so destination apps and ad content remain child-appropriate when the supply side is Families-constrained.
Editorial inference: a standard rewarded playable end-card loop that cannot be dismissed within five seconds is a direct format risk under this policy for child audiences—even if the creative is “gameplay accurate.”
Limits of this record
Body-read of the Families Policies help article. The Self-Certified Ads SDK programme list was linked but not exhaustively inventoried here. No Play Console app review was performed. COPPA/GDPR compliance is required by the policy text but not independently audited in this edition.
