Google Play 16 KB page-size requirement: who must rebuild, and by when

Current Android Developers guidance on Google Play’s 16 KB page-size compatibility rule—API 35+ apps, native code scope, and the February 2027 update deadline.

Google’s current Support 16 KB page sizes guide (last updated 16 September 2026 UTC on the page footer) is the operative compatibility record for this edition. Apps that use NDK / native code (directly or via SDKs) must rebuild for 16 KB devices. Java/Kotlin-only apps are already compatible. Playable HTML wrappers delivered as ad creatives are outside this Play app-binary rule unless the store app itself ships native code.

What the documentation currently requires

The Android Developers guide states that beginning with Android 15, AOSP supports 16 KB page-size devices. If an app uses NDK libraries directly or through an SDK, it must be rebuilt. Without recompiling, apps will not work on 16 KB devices in future Android releases.

Google Play compatibility requirement (current guide): all apps targeting Android 15 (API level 35) and higher must support 16 KB memory page sizes on 64-bit devices on Google Play. Starting 1 February 2027, if app updates do not support 16 KB page sizes, developers will not be able to release those updates.

Impact checks include APK Analyzer for .so files, ELF segment alignment at 16 KB (load align 2**14), zipalign with 16 KB page alignment, and RELRO alignment notes for older NDK toolchains. Build guidance includes AGP 8.5.1+ and uncompressed shared libraries.

Earlier blog date (historical announcement)

The 8 May 2025 Android Developers Blog announced that starting 1 November 2025, new apps and updates targeting Android 15+ must support 16 KB. That blog remains useful context, but the developer.android.com compatibility section body-read for this record states the 1 February 2027 update-blocking date. Treat the guide as governing for current release planning; record the blog as an earlier public announcement that may not match the current guide’s deadline wording.

Who should act, and how

  1. Release eng: identify native .so presence; rebuild/realign for 16 KB; upgrade AGP/NDK as required; test on 16 KB emulator/device images.
  2. UA / live-ops: treat store update freezes after the guide’s deadline as a release risk for API 35+ titles with native code—not as a playable-ad ZIP rule.
  3. SDK owners: confirm mediation/analytics/game-engine binaries are 16 KB aligned before the next forced update.
