WhatsApp Ads Creative Format: Meta's Newest Ad Surface

The WhatsApp ads creative format arrives as channel ads and Status display units, a new surface worth testing early, not betting the quarter on.

Meta confirmed this week that ads are coming to WhatsApp, and the WhatsApp ads creative format looks nothing like the News Feed or Reels units most game creative teams already have a pipeline for. The format splits into two placements, according to Mobile Dev Memo's read of the announcement: promoted channels surfaced inside WhatsApp's Channels directory, and display ads running in the Status feed, both living inside the app's Updates tab rather than inside a chat itself. Meta paired the ad launch with a new subscription option, letting users pay a monthly fee for access to specific channels, a monetisation layer entirely separate from advertising. Understand it early. Test it cautiously. What no game creative team should do is build a quarter's plan around it yet.

What the two ad formats actually are

Promoted channels work more like a discovery unit than an ad. A channel, potentially a game's own official channel, can surface to users browsing the Channels directory, which makes the placement paid distribution for an owned audience-building surface rather than a direct-response buy. Status display ads are closer to what a UA team already recognises: a visual unit sitting inside a Stories-like feed, close in spirit to the Instagram and Facebook Stories placements most game creative pipelines already cut variants for. The context is the part that matters. WhatsApp's Status feed sits inside a messaging-first app that people use overwhelmingly for one-to-one and group communication rather than as a broadcast social feed, and nobody has a benchmark yet for how attention behaves in there when the ad is for a game.

Why "coming soon" should set the pace of the response

Meta's own language framed the rollout as arriving soon rather than live everywhere today, and the announcement itself came in thin on format specifications and targeting mechanics, thinner still on measurement beyond the two placement types. That thinness is normal at announcement stage. It still means any creative team building assets against this format today is building against an incomplete spec. Waiting it out entirely would be the wrong call, since an early tester on a brand-new placement tends to learn something real before the auction fills up, but keep the first bet small: a handful of adapted creative variants rather than a from-scratch production run, until Meta publishes real specifications for aspect ratio and duration, plus the safe zones a playable or video team needs to build against reliably.

What a creative team should actually test first

Given how little Meta has confirmed, the first move is adaptation rather than new production. A studio's existing Status and Stories-format video assets are the closest fit to the new Status display placement, and they belong first in the queue once the format opens for buying, since they already match the vertical, short-form conventions the surface probably shares with Instagram and Facebook Stories. The promoted channel placement is a different problem entirely. It rewards a studio that already runs an active owned channel with regular content, not a one-off creative asset, so a team with no WhatsApp Channels presence has foundational work to do before paying to promote anything there. Before committing meaningful spend to either format, confirm what targeting options exist for app install campaigns specifically, because a channel-and-Status surface built initially around brand and messaging use cases may not yet carry the install-optimisation tooling a performance-focused UA team actually needs.

What measurement will need before spend can scale

Creative is half the problem.

Attribution for a new placement inside WhatsApp raises the questions every new Meta surface has raised since ATT: whether install-level outcomes on iOS route through the same aggregated event measurement Meta already runs elsewhere, and whether an MMP's existing Meta integration extends automatically to a new placement type or needs its own configuration. This week's announcement answers neither, having focused on the ad formats themselves rather than the measurement plumbing underneath them. A measurement lead should do roughly what a creative lead should do with the format uncertainty: flag it now, ask Meta's account team directly once the format opens for buying, and assume nothing about parity with News Feed or Reels measurement until someone confirms it.

Where this fits against Meta's broader app-ads roadmap

This launch follows a run of Meta investment in automated, AI-driven ad tooling across its core surfaces, the Advantage+ app campaign expansion this desk covered earlier this year being the clearest example. WhatsApp ads read as an extension of the same instinct: open another surface to the automated bidding and targeting logic that already runs Meta's core ad business, rather than build a bespoke new buying system from scratch. That's a reasonable bet for creative teams to make about how the format will eventually work, even before Meta confirms it, and it argues for keeping any early Status or Channels creative broadly consistent with what already performs on Advantage+ campaigns rather than treating WhatsApp as a separate creative strategy. The format is new. The buying logic underneath it almost certainly is not.

What to put in the brief this week

For a studio deciding whether to brief anything at all before the format is fully live, the smallest useful action is preparing a short creative variant set rather than a full production slate: two or three Status-format cuts already sitting in the asset library, trimmed and captioned for a messaging-app context instead of a broadcast feed, ready to submit the moment buying opens. It is a cheap hedge against landing weeks behind the competitors who move the day Meta confirms availability, and it commits no meaningful production budget to a format whose targeting and measurement details nobody has confirmed yet.
